Even more frightening is the use of child and/or underage children as sex workers.

In a country which has a record of child abuse by the hands of the LTTE, many NGO’s have paid attention, and are taking the necessary steps towards it. But the sex trade in Colombo has a different story. I have no direct information about the sex trade in Sri Lanka or anywhere for that matter neither am I involved in any way whatsoever, but I am commenting on this topic from the information I have gained from the Internet and the media. This post will begin from the quoted articles and at the end I have voiced my personal views on this matter.

Quoted text begins here…

=====================================================================================

Date: Tue, 16 Dec 1997 12:14:59 PST

I live in the Maldives and use to visit Colombo in Sri Lanka during the last 10 years. I never had any difficulty in finding girls in this town, like in India a good connection with taxi driver and hotel porter will solve your need. I just like to add some tips to the information.

- Visit Hotel Rainbow at Palmyrah Mawatta in Galle Road. Ask any taxi driver or threesho and he will take you to a dozen of similar little hotel on the road to the airport with waiting girls in the main parlor all. If you don't like the place you can take the girl to your hotel.

- In Liberty Plaza at Liberty Shopping Center just hang around a little and some old men will contact you, one of this is Joe, a toothless old man that will escort you at the 4th floor in the same building where a brothel run by 3-4 old women is active at cheap price ( 10-20 USD) . Noting special. Bargain as usual.

_ Discotheque are now full of Eastern Europe girls on prostitution for 80-150 USD at your hotel room.

- Casino also are a good place for hunting. During my last visit at Bailey Casino I was winning few hundred dollar and I donate to a Thai girl near to me just few fiches for play. I end up with a 500 dollar winning booty and when I ask the girl her tariff for the night she smiling say "Noting my dear" as she have win 200 USD with my initial gift. Usually the price for Thai girl in Casino is 100-150 for all night. Some are afraid to follow you at night due to several military security checking points and all girls are without proper ID card as illegal immigrants. I advise you to contact them and arrange for a visit to your hotel next day afternoon, when you are more relaxed, more sober and in full strength for action. Safe sex if required as usual. The foreigners always carry condom but some local prostitutes not. Take along with you or buy at local chemist the right condom you need.

Thanks for your publication and information so needed by travellers like me.

=====================================================================================

Date: Fri, 13 Feb 98 17:45:42

Subject: Info on Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka Is a beautiful place the entire city of Colombo is very close to the coast line therefore the sea is always visible it feels like a holiday. Well the best place for the fast action to women is at the Casinos there are aproximately 12 casinos and they all have girls these range from Russians, Thais and Sinhalese(Sri lankan). The best I have tried are the Russians but they are not many now as they were frightened off by the last bomb blast. The city is back to normal but with lots of security checks.

At the moment only the Thais are available most of them are st the Ballies casino. Here they are managed by the mamasan a thai women but you communicate with girls if you gamble at any of your fancy. They charge US100 for full service for the night and you can bring them back to the hotel. Its best to have a chat with them first and state your fancy clearly such as sex,anal(backside)and blow job if they agree than take them. Do not ever pay them more or give them any money till you're finish in the morning with her if she is good do not tip more than 1000rupees. Good hotels are Oberoi and Hilton.

Subject: sir lanka

=====================================================================================

In Kandy

Asked a taxi driver and was shown to the Unique View and the Village Inn. Both were hotels high on the hill South of town. They were near each other and were both down dirt roads. The cost was about $45 to $55. We were shown a small selection (early is better). You are given a room and a condom and about an hour. The girls ranged from 15 to 40 years old, from beautiful to ugly and skilled to dead logs. The best was a long haired one at the Unique View. She looked OK until she was nude then she looked great. She acted like we were being listened to and insisted I not tell anyone there that she had done oral(an extra $10 and great!). All the girls spoke English very poorly.

=============================================================================

Quoted text ends here.

If you have read the above text you may have read about how various institutions deal with this matter. It has been mentioned apart from illegal brothels, hotels and casinos are the most common places where the sex industry thrives. In a legal point of view, hotels commonly can be excluded because hotels primarily provide accommodation for guests. If a guest brings an outsider companion for a “night’s stand” the hotel is not responsible due to two reasons. One, the guest bought the companion, not the hotel. Two, the hotel did not provide such companions or information to the guests. But in reality many people working in these hotels know of such locations and do provide information discreetly.

On the other casinos is another story. Casinos in Sri Lanka are very small and have a small and limited clientele base. So these casinos cater to the foreign crowd offering competitive rates and etc. But rich foreign people do not gamble in Sri Lankan casinos due to one reason. The amount you win is very low compared to other countries. This leaves the “not so rich” class of foreigners, mainly from other Asian countries. Since most of the people who gamble in casinos are the “not so rich” class, a new breed of people also enters the casino. They are the “call girls” who hang around in/out the casino. Since the casinos become notorious for becoming hang out places for “call girls” many people who are not gamblers enter casinos just to “get laid”. This opens the door to a whole range of new customers. Since they cannot enter the casinos without gambling, the people looking for hookers are enticed in to gambling. As a result of these “call girls” the casinos receive a new customer base

Personally I believe the casinos know of the “call girls” functioning in the casino even if they do not advocate it. But they do not take any action to remove these “call girls” because they fear they may lose a large customer base.

In most places only foreign or Lankan sex workers are available. But I believe that many brothels around the country have underage sex workers in their payroll. We have heard of busts of so called massage centers and others, but it is the higher class institutions which are almost always filtered out of the net. Even though these institutions do not actively partake in sponsoring the illegal sex trade, it is where the trade thrives unknown to them. If the authorities concerned does not take any action, very soon Colombo will become the #1 red light city in South Asia.

THE RIGHT OF TRANSPORTATION

One of the basic rights a person of any country is entitled to is the right to travel to any part of the country. One of the basic means of transportation would be the public transportation service. But for another segment of Sri Lanka’s population would use private vehicles for transportation. Having a personal vehicle made many people’s life much more wholesome. Even more valuable is the service rendered to the Sri Lankan inland economy by the commercial users of private vehicles, especially vans.
Generally many people use vehicles for only about three years. Then they dispose of the vehicle. Particularly in Japan where there are special licensing methods in force that makes it very expensive to keep a vehicle older than four years. So with more and more cars junked every day, most of these disposed of vehicles finds its way to poor countries such as Sri Lanka.

The problem begins for the government because due to the influx of used cars, Sri Lanka would become a large car dumping waste land. So the government imposed a special import restriction on vehicles older than a certain number of years, depending on the class of the vehicle. Personally I believe this is a good move on behalf of the government. But it does not stop there. It gets better. Much better.

We need at the minimum, more than 100 million rupees to maintain the dogfuckers in the parliament just for one month. (Not exaggerated, Source: The Sunday Times) Since our state coffers are always empty the government needs to find ways to earn hard cash, without losing valuable public support. Some shithead in the parliament decided to increase the vehicle import duty to earn more cash. As a result vehicles are very expensive. To make matters worse due to the widening difference in the government account books the import duty has been significantly increased in every government budget.

At the time of writing the import duty for a used diesel car is a little over 400%. That’s right 400%. A similar petrol car has an import duty just over 350%. That means if you import a car which was used by some Japanese person for three years for Rs. 1 000 000, when you import it to Sri Lanka you will have to pay Rs. 4 000 000 for that same car, and 300% would make some minister very happy far an extremely short period. In Japan a brand new Toyota Corolla would cost about Rs. 900 000, but in Sri Lanka a used one costs Rs. 3 200 000. You do the math.

Even though a vehicle is considered an essential item in many countries in the world, one can argue that a car can be considered a luxury item in terms of the Sri Lankan economy. But one of the main transport solution provider in Sri Lanka is the dual-purpose van. Vans such as the Toyota Hiace, Nissan Caravan have a mainstay in the Sri Lankan vehicle market due to their flexibility. Owning such a van is every self-employed or small scale businessman’s dream. These vans provide the basic need for any small scale service provider. Transport of goods and services. Whereas a large scale producer can easily deploy lorries etc to distribute their goods, a smale4 scale person may not produce enough products to fill a lorry but a van would be the ideal compromise.

The government allows reduced import taxes for vehicles used in industry and development of the country. These vehicles include heavy construction machinery, lorries and etc. The import taxes are only about 5.5% and upwards. Vans are also used by many small scale people to their business activities. Generally speaking a home based safety pin plant would not need a lorry to carry all of their pr oduce to the market. They would need some vehicle that is a dual-purpose vehicle which can carry the finished product and double as a vehicle that they can use for other activities such as family transport. Vans also suffer from high import duty figures. The duty ranges from more than 450% to even more for a passenger carrying version.

So why doesn’t the government at least reduce the tax on vans to benefit the common person. Well the answer is a Win-Lose, Lose-Win situation. If the government reduces the tax on vans, no one would buy cars and the government would lose money. The solution would be to try other ways to earn money (Oil for instance) and make the vehicle an essential item and follow suit like many countries such as India.

One last thing. Normally exporters are known as the lifeblood of the nation since they earn valuable foreign exchange. On the other hand foreign investor give us foreign exchange for a short rime and takes it back along with more money to their own country. Normally any Board Of Investment (BOI) project can import any number of duty free cars as they wish. One of my friends has a small scale export business. Even though they are providing a service for this country they cannot import a van due to the high import prices. Buying a good quality van in Sri Lanka also costs as much.

The irony is here the good guy gets nothing from the government whereas the leech gets everything a nd more from the state. I can only hope someone can reduce this stupid import tax, or you can wait another two years and “jump the shark” with me to some great country and retire with an S600.

SRIPATHI’S ARREST - MAHINDA’S POLICY THE MURDER OF FREE SPEECH

First of all before reading this blog please note that I am not a political supporter of Sripathi or any other person for that matter. I was not hired by anyone to publish this article. I have no blue, green or rainbow coloured blood in my body. The existing blood is red due the hemoglobin present in my blood.
I don’t care whether this Sripathi guy gets freed or not. Hell, I don’t care if all the ministers went to prison, but I want to highlight the unethical tactics of our very own president “King”pakse. Before you read I want mention on fundamental fact about Sri Lankans. Most of us (excluding me, but including you if you’re reading this blog!) Sri Lankans are idiots. Rulers have exploited this fact for thousands of years, beginning from our very own Wijeya down to Sri Wikramarajasinghe. One could expect that after the end of monarchy and with the beginning of the Colebrook Constitution in 183x we could finally get some genius to rule the county make Sri Lanka a land like no other. The problem we chose a great genius who was more brainy than ourselves. After JR introduced multi party system, executive presidency and various other vices, the country which coasted downhill was put into 4th gear and was accelerated downhill. Now in 2005 we got the latest genius from the South, whom I thought would put the country back uphill. Now it seems after 2005, our country is just near the end of the proverbial bottomless pit.

Since this blog is not about the southern genius, so let me concentrate on the arrest of Sripathi. Now I never knew a guy named Sripathi existed on our little island until the sacking of the fat clown, Mr. Not So Merry and this Sripathi guy. To make things short, yesterday I saw read the front page on the Sunday Time on the arrest of this Sripathi. The paper stated that Sripathi was arrested and remanded until Tuesday. The charge was a misuse of a state owned vehicle. Well if our president arrested ministers for misusing state vehicles, our country will be on the right track. Yeah, right. All the ministers, provincial councilor and government employees misuse government property. They even commit fraud that makes the misuse of state vehicles seem like child’s play. Can you remember the VAT scam, the sports ministry’s human trafficking, various abductions taking place in this country and countless other criminal activities? If the president does not take any action about these world famous scams then why does he go after such a minor scam? Has the president gone bonkers?

It seems after being sacked by the southern genius , Mr. Not So Merry and his little lap dog Sripathi set to reveal the various conspiracies inside the proverbial Sri Lankan closet to gain the support and sympathy of the “intelligent” Sri Lankan people. These two guys have been going on about secret deals and so on. What they say may be true and Mr. Not So Merry said on one occasion that he would be kidnapped and hung on a post for exposing the truth. Since many abductions happen around in Colombo an abduction of Mr. Not So Merry would become an high profile issue, which would be very bad for the people involved. The same can be said for his little lap dog. Recently the duo has presented a report to the bribery commission like two saints about the alleged fraud committed during the purchase of MiG 27 fighter jets from Ukraine. Since abducting both of them was extremely risky the next best thing was to put the little lap dog in prison with the hope of making him and his colleague shut up.

What do “King”pakse think about the Sri Lankan people? Any ass would know the Sripathi was arrested not for misusing a state owned Land Rover. He may have sold it for anyone’s sake but it was the perfect opportunity to kick his sorry butt in to jail. If Sripathi was put into jail for such a minor matter then the prisons would overflow with various government guys for crimes ranging from stealing a pen to urinating in public.

Personally I prefer if Sripathi would keep his ass behind bars until doomsday. But for free speech this would mean a catastrophe. If you say something very true about various persons of the government and if it causes major controversy, something will happen to you. I’ve heard various ministers saying the freedom of speech is protected in Sri Lanka. Now if a minister like Sripathi exposes something about what goes behind the closed doors and got himself in jail, what would happen to a blogger like us or a professional reporter? Who knows it may range from damaging houses, beating, robbery, murder and even mutilating helpless babies.

What goes behind the closed doors of this country, we will never know. The million dollar question is why do we make the same mistake over and over again? Why do we elect the same big assed crooked and corrupt politicians without electing honest people who are committed in seeing this country reaching the stars? The answer to all of these questions is a big fat NO. If any new guy is elected into parliament he cannot resist the piles of money lying around just waiting for someone to pick it up. Even if the new guy can fight his temptation, other ministers will convert him it one of them, because it would become a problem for their activities. They know that even one saint in the middle of thousand devils can change everything. The best thing we can do is to just to boycott the elections and do something productive on that “special day”.

And for all you bloggers who are reading this don’t say anything bad to “big” people and let’s hope I would live to blog another day.
